NFL DRAFT-FIRST ROUND
Since my bud, HM, (click on the link for Hoopramblings on the right side) has done a Simon Cowell negative review of the 1st round, I thought I would play the role of Paula Abdul and give you positive thoughts on each pick. Here's the first 10 picks!
1. Oakland JaMarcus Russell - QB -- Big dude! Strong arm! Very, very strong arm. At worst, he will be better than Jeff George!
2. Detroit Calvin Johnson - WR -- Just because Matt Millen really screwed up 2 of the 3 previous times he picked a WR in the first round don't mean he messed up again. Best player in the draft!
3.Cleveland Joe Thomas-OT- Big, strong, Badger!! Smart enough to avoid the media circus in New York and relaxes on a fishing boat with his old man. You gotta love his commitment to the sport!
4. Tampa Bay Gaines Adams - DE -- They may call you undersized, dawg, but they also said the same thing about Dwight Freeney and now he is wearing a Super Bowl ring. So is your new coach. Have fun!
5. Arizona Levi Brown - OT -- You get to start right away and block for Matt Leinart and Edge!
6 Washington LaRon Landry - S -- We all know what a great judge of talent that Washington owner Dan Synder is, and if he is willing to spend money on you, you mus be good, dawg!
7.Minnesota Adrian Peterson-RB- "Boomer Sooner, Sooner Boomer!"
8. Atlanta Jammal Anderson -DE-You were a great running back for the Falcons and now with the extra weight, you will be fine at DE. It reminds me of when the Falcons tried to convert #1 pick Audray Bruce from LB to TE and that worked out great!! Just don't let Michale Vick take care of your dogs for the weekend, dawg!!!
9. Miami Ted Ginn Jr. - WR- You are from Ohio State, you ran back the opening kickoff for a touchdown, we love you! We love Miami, at least South Beach!!!
10. Houston Amobi Okoye-DT- Just like Jordin, you are so young. And just like Jordin, you are good enough to be a professional already!!!
One of my favorite college coaches has returned to the bench- Rick Majerus, at least as of now he has. Several years back he took the USC job that then resgned after 3 or 4 days, so he is till within that window.
Majerus takes over the St. Louis University Billikens.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billiken. He returns to the Mid-west, and like Marquette, another Jesuit college, albeit without Marquette's basketball tradition. Hopefully his health will allow him to coach for several years and we will hear great stories about him living in a hotel, dining at great restaurants like Denny's after a game all overshadowing some great game time coaching strategies.
Best decision by SLU President Lawrence Biondi since he sent me to the Annapolis Conference my senior year when Biondi was Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at Loyola!
Where do we start with discussing this past weekend in Chicago sports? 1) My excitement over the Bears' drafting of Greg Olsen was quickly tempered when I found out he was represented by DICK Rosenhaus! BTW, you would think that Rosenhaus would at least come up with some new tricks. Rosenhaus and Olsen were on the phone when San Diego was picking right before the Bears' pick Rosenhaus did the same thing several years back when he was representing Willis McGahee. Angelo had the best line during draft weekend when he said that Rosenhaus "could mess-up a car funeral." Bears also sign as a free-agent another undersized Florida QB! 2) White Sox drop two to the floundering Angels over the weekend and place Thome on the DL. At least, Brian Anderson was sent down to the minors. 3) Alright, the Baby Bulls have arrived by sweeping defending champs Miami out of the playoffs. (Will both Miami and Dallas be out after the first round?!) It is too bad that in this great sports town it took this playoff victory to get some people to talk about the Bulls again!
Tyra!?!!! Not only is she eating too much food, but she doesn't think she has to pay for it!

With the Southsiders rained out (G, that menas the game was "postponed"!!) here's a nice story about Paulie and Thome reaching out to the community. Don't know if a single dude can be a foster parent, but maybe it's time to look into it!

Famed and legnedary author David Halberstam dies in a car accident. To call David Halberstam a great sports writer fails to give him justice. Just consider the fact that he won a Pulitzer Prize at the age of 30. But Halberstam also was a great sportswriter! Like many Bulls' fans, I read his book "Playing for Keeps", among other Halberstam books still sitting on my shelves. John Feinstein has stated tht Halberstam's book "Breaks of the Game" an inside look at the 1979 Portland Trail Blazers served as his inspiration of his best selling book "A Season on the Brink."

UNC's Brandan Wright declars for the NBA Draft. It's possible that the top three picks in the NBA Draft will be college freshmen. I guess that's better than the top three picks being high school seniors.

For those of you who haven't seen the short "The Landlord" with Will Ferrell, it is hilarious. "Haunted Lesbian Sorority" is also worth a few moments of your time.

Wow! Once in a while you will find something you can really like about the Wisconsin Badgers!

It is election day in Chicago, for aldermanic run-offs (those who did not garner 50% of the votes in the last election). Personally, I would rather vote for who has the btter booty: Kim Karadashian or Jessica Biel.

Ex-Badgers' Coach Brad Sonderberg get fired by Saint Louis University (another fine Jesuit University!) after a 20 win season. It is pretty late in the game to fire a coach, so if nothing else the timing on this one is pretty strange. In other Badgers' news, Bucky is set to visit Cameron Indoor Stadium to play DUKE in the next installment of the ACC-Big Ten challenge.

For Your Consideration: 1. John Beilein leaves WVU for the Michigan job. His reported salary at Michigan is $1.3 million per year. The buyout for his West Virginia contract is reported at $2.5 million. Michigan is not taking care of the WVU buyout, so unless Beilein negotiates a settlement or somehow has the buy-out clause nullified, he will ahve to work for 2 years at Michigan just to pay for the buy-out of his old contract. I expect that Beilein probably has legal counsel working on this one.
2. The University of Illinois Barely Fighting Illini have a Spring Football game scheduled in Chicago this Saturday. The game is to be played at St. Rita High School. Local Illini alums initially thought that the Illini were playing St. Rita High School and were concerned about another football loss in the Ron Zook era.
3. Speaking of the Big Ten, with Ohio State's loss in the NCAA championship game, that makes 3 defeats in the Championship game by the Big Ten since 2002. I'm just saying!

Premiere Magazine's 20 Worst Post-Oscar Career Moves. Okay, Cuba Gooding, Jr. has to be on the top of the list. Boat Trip ?! I guess Halle Berry deserves it for Catwoman (Nice costume!) But, What about Nicholas Cage?

Don Imus has just been fired by CBS. The question is will he get picked-up by Satelite Radio, either XM or Sirius (Doubtful that Sirius will pick Imus up since Howard Stern hates Imus!)

Tonight's White Sox game cancelled due to extreme cold and windy conditions.

Okay, when will MLB learn how to schedule games early in the season. Either postpone the start of the season for a week (add a few more double-headers if need be) or schedule the first two series of each season at warmer climate or at dome stadiums. Sure, Chicago teams would have to start each season on the road but it is better than sitting in freezing conditions!

So it looks like a former Illini assistant coach, Billy Gillespie is Kentucky's new basketball coach! Is Ashley happy?
