Hey Tony, Ozzie Made Sure He Had the Right Reliever Coming Out of the Bullpen
Not a great game for the "great" manager Tony LaRussa. Problems with the bullpen plus bad run management (you need 2 runs in the 9th to tie, so you hit and run?).
I guess Tony's micro-management got the Cards to the World Series, so you can't change now. Win or lose.

Tuesday Morning Thoughts
1. Palmer to the Bengals for a first next year and a conditional first the following year!!That's a ton to give up (comparable to what the Bears gave up for Cutler) for someone who hasn't played this season. Will he be ready to play after the bye-week. He better be. I would like nothing more than to have this work for the Raiders and the Bengals get the worst picks possible.
2. Theo - Cubs deal not done. God forbid the Cubs give up Matt Garza! Really!?! I understand the rationale that why give the Red Sox anything valuable- the Red Sox will give in eventually because the Red Sox will not pay Theo this season just to hang around. But, to state there is no way you give up Matt Garza!? Did Matt Garza have a Cy Young season and I missed it? Garza is more valuable to the Red Sox than the Cubs (familiar with the AL Ease), but really stop making Matt Garza out to be Verlander!!

Cards- Rangers World Series
So far, I've picked each post-season series correctly (Granted I picked the Rangers and the Cards because I was sick of the Wisconsin/Milwaukee and Detroit "ruling the sports world" talk!).
First, some huge credit of Tony LaRussa, whom I have often called overrated. Well this year he deserves all the credit he gets.
Gotta think that this the Rangers should be a prohibitive favor. But the Cards have home-field advantage and a rested Chris Carpenter in game 1. I will wait till I see the projected pitching match-ups for my official pick, but right now I am going with the Rangers in 6.
Devin Hester Adds to Hall of Fame Resume
Apparently the Vikings coaching staff shares the same belief as HM and some other Minnesota readers that Devin Hester is not a Hall of Famer, so what the heck-just kick to him. With the new kick-off rules, just about any NFL kicker should kick into the endzone everytime. Watching the game, as soon as I saw Devin having to come out of the endzone to catch the ball, I screamed "Are you freakin' kidding me?" Once Devin caught the ball, I knew that there was about an 80% chance that he was another TD and at worst a decent return of about 30-40 yards. Sure enough, history was made (With each TD, Devin just adds to his record of kick returns for TDs.) But if not bad enough for the Vikes, on their next punt, what does Kluwe do? Apparently not happy with the boos he heard previously, kicks it directly to Devin, which he almost broke free for another TD.
To top it off, Devin may have had his best game as a receiver. Maybe the Bears can play him occasionally at DB (something he did at the University of Miami), he can add an interception return for TD to his resume.
Victory Monday is always enjoyable, even over a bad team. A bad team that I will be rootign for next week. "Go Vikes, Play your game! Beat the Packers." (One can dream, right?)

Suck it, Philly!!
1. Phillies- Third (could be second?) highest payroll in baseball. Over 100 regular season wins. Prohibitive favorite to at least make the World Series. Kicked out of the playoffs by the Wild Card Cards!
2. Eagles- Anointed the "Dream Team" in the off-season. Now sitting with a 1-4 record.
3. The Philly Cheese steak Sandwich is, based on the above, very concerned that it too may be overrated!

MLB Playoffs Making Me a Couch Potato
Alright I was a couch potato long before the playoffs- but I think the playoffs have been great so far. No first-round sweeps, and three of the four series are going to the limit- five games.
Yankees- Detroit tonight. Hard to root for the Tigers, but are you going to root for the Yankees? The use of pitchers for both teams should be interesting. So there is really NO way that Leyland uses Verlander tonight?

And credit to Tony LaRussa- great managing this season and this series!

Sun-Times' Mark Potash Makes His Case for Devin Hester as a Hall of Famer
Gee, I wonder who else has stated that Devin Hester belongs in the Hall of Fame:

Unlike me, Potash qualifies it a little and thinks that Devin needs some more "stats" to get in.

If You Still Don't Think Devin Hester is a Hall of Famer, then Just Stop Watching Football
In Baseball, there is a statistic called WAR- Wins Above Replacement. You can't really interpose such a stat to the NFL- 16 games compared to 162 games- but in any case I think Devin Hester would have at least a WAR of 2. Every season Hester has been with the Bears he is worth at least 2 wins a season. This past Sunday, I saw Devin Hester set another NFL record with his punt return for a TD. But, that's only part of the story. His kick-off return set up another Bears' TD. When he is on the field on special teams, the opposing team has to consider him. If not, he will lose the game, plain and simple!
Devin Hester- NFL Hall of Famer.
Dream Team, My Ass!!!
