August 8th- An Interesting Anniversary for Chicago Baseball
August 8, 1976- In the first game of a double-header, the Chicago White Sox donned some pretty unique uniforms: shorts! It looks like the Sox only wore these great unis for three games.
8-8-88: It's also anniversary-well sort of- on the other side of town. The first night game (yes, youngsters until 1988, there were no lights and ergo no night games at Wrigley!) was scheduled for August 8, 1988. Unfortunately, Mother Nature rained the game out after 3 plus innings, so the first official night game at Wrigley was August 9th, 1988.

Good Work, White Sox Coaching Staff
Ozzie, Greg Walker and the rest of the White Sox staff has gotten plenty of criticism this season, a good amount of it well deserved.
But Ozzie Guillen, Joey Cora, and Don Cooper should be applauded for pushing Jake Peavy's start from Satyrday to Sunday giving him an extra day of rest (8 innings of shutout ball) and calling up Zach Stewart to earn his first MLB victory on Saturday. The move lead to the White Sox getting a 3 game sweep of the Twins in Minnesota.

Hall of Fame Weekend: Richard Dent
On Saturday, Richard Dent, Super Bowl XX MVP, will make it three members of the 1985 Chicago Bears defense in the Hall of Fame (Dan Hampton, Mike Singletary and Dent). A well deserved honor for Dent and further evidence of the greatest NFL defense ever.

Randy Moss and his NFL Legacy
Jason Whitlock does a superb job of summing up Randy Moss' career. HM has a poll on his blog on Randy Moss and his Hall of Fame chances. After reading Whitlock's column, I am persuaded that Moss should be a first ballot HOF, despite all his issues on and off the field

Robert Feder (no one covers media better) is reporting that the Chicago Sun-times Sports section is laying off Mike Mulligan and Elliot Harris, among others, in continuing cuts int he newspaper industry. Mully continues on the WSCR in his morning slot, but with Elliot Harris gone, where will I go for my daily fix of pics of beautiful ladies? Where, I ask, where?!

Cities to be jealous of (in terms of how good their teams are):
1. Boston, as much as I would hate to admit it, has to be #1. Bruins are the Stanley Cup Champs. The Patriots are the Patriots, with some interesting off-season moves, looking like a prime AFC contender. The Red Sox, despite some pitching issues, have a monster line-up, are at worst a wild-card team. The Celtics, maybe starting to slip a little are still a playoff team. Boston- all major sports teams in the playoffs! That's just sick.
2. Philly. When did the Phillies become the Yankees at every trade deadline? The Flyers were a 2010 Stanley Cup Finalist. The Eagles have been proclaimed by some as the "Dream Team." The weak link among the major sports- the Sixers.
3. Chicago. At least I hope Chicago is #3 on the list, ahead of New York. Da Bulls were in the NBA Eastern Finals and if the NBA lockout ever ends should contend for the NBA ring. Da Bears were in the NFC title game. Okay, the Bears' off season has been less than spectacular but still. Blackhawks were the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion and had a good off-season. Baseball- well, 2008 seems like a long time ago.

Lingerie Basketball?
Well I guess if you are going to have lingerie football, you might as well have lingerie basketball. Or maybe not. Not a fan of either. I guess I prefere my lingerie on late night movies or Maxim magazine. But, that's just me.
Bears Town
Driving back form Miller Park on Saturday night (saw Prince Fielder hit a 475 foot rocket shot), had a "debate" with Badger. My proposition- Chicago, like most Midwestern cities (maybe St. Louis would be the exception) is a "football town" over a "baseball town." In other words, this is a "Bears Town."Some evidence in support of my proposition- top sports story on the news last night, Olin Kreutz and the Bears predominating over either the White Sox and the Cubbies.

Chicago Sports Fans- Not Happy
Not a great week for Chicago sports- at least from a "feel" point of view.1. Bears. Training camp has just started and many Bears' fans are already down on the overall lack of free agent signing and more importantly, the departure/trade of Olin Kruetz and Greg Olsen. Let me start by stating that in my opinion, Olin Kruetz was one of the most overrated
Bear players in the last 5 years. Having said that, you don't let a team leader and anchor of an offensive line that you are trying to improve go unless you have a much better option ready to step in. Chris Stewart does not appear to fit that description. The departure of Greg Olsen (and only getting draft choices in return!) has added to the current depression of Bears' fans. At the same time the biggest free agent signing to date- WR Roy Williams released by the Cowboys.
2. White Sox- losing 2 out of 3 to the Red Sox coupled with the continuing unacceptable play of Rios and Dunn fuels frustration in a division that is very winnable.
3. Cubbies- standing pat at the trade deadline, really?! So expect for dumping Fukudome on the tribe, Hendry moves no one? No one wanted Pena or Zambrano? A-Ram not waiving his no-trade clause. Cubs' fans- optimistic for the future?
