UVa Lacrosse Player Charged with Murder of Female Lacrosse Player

I'm guessing this "little" story will not get nearly as much media coverage as the "Duke Lacrosse Rape Case."

From Chicago Breaking Sports News:
Tribune News Services

A University of Virginia men's lacrosse player was charged Monday with first-degree murder in the death of a women's lacrosse player at the school.

George Huguely, 22, of Chevy Chase, Md., was charged in the death of Yeardley Love, 22, of Cockeysville, Md., Charlottesville police said in a news release. Both were fourth-year students.

Police were called to an off-campus apartment around 2:15 a.m. Monday about a possible alcohol overdose. Officials have not determined the cause of death but say there were signs of physical trauma. Witnesses told police Huguely and Love were in a relationship.

Both highly ranked teams are preparing for the national tournament later this month.
Virginia's men's team was ranked No. 1 for most of the season and expects to host a first-round game in the tournament after winning the Atlantic Coast Conference championship last month. The women's team also was expected to get into the tournament.

Huguely, a midfielder, wasn't a starter but played in all 15 games this season. He had four goals and three assists. Love played defense and started in three games this season.

Virginia's athletics department said no coaches, administrators or players were available for comment.

Charlottesville police and prosecutors did not immediately return phone messages seeking comment.

Huguely is being held in the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail.
