Mauer and Torii were each good for about 100 games. By year end Mauer was banged up so bad he didn't make a decent throw after September 15. Both basically won on reputation.
Jeter is a solid above-average shortstop. He is the BEST fielding SS in all of the AL? Really? (He may be, but it just seems hard to imagine).
Once you win the Gold Glove, your reputation gives you a strong advantage over everyone else. Buerhle deserved it but may not have gotten it if Kenny Rodgers and Mike Mussina had not retired.
