Philly are interested, and that would give him a good chance to finally get a World Series ring (but how much value can he can provide a NL team. Can't play the field at all and not a great pinch-hitter). Indians may be interested with Hafner hurt. Can't imagine the White Sox or Tigers wouldn't try to block the Indians. I would hvae to say there's a good chance Thome ain't going anywhere (unless the Twins really want to slash payroll).
Other players reportedly placed on waivers thus far- Jason Kubel and Heath Bell.

and this can't be a payroll move-- we only owe him about 600K.
I just read it's about $500,000. A bargain for a contender. But the Phillies? This is similar to the waiver deal the White Sox made in 2009 sending him to the Dodgers who looked like a prime contender for the World Series that year (good intentions by the SOx then and the Twins now). But I don't think he hit a home run for the Dodgers as a pure pinch hitter. Not sure he can give the Phillies anything off the bench at this point. But could still be a part-time DH for a AL Contender. Hope it is not the Tigers or the Tribe.
100% agree with your analysis and desire to keep him out of AL Central-- although its reported he'd like to finish in Cleveland.
Why would the Sox want him? So they can finish only a couple games out of the playoffs?
Still makes a ton more sense than the Phillies.
Ha- I guess if my team was 15 games back, I would be making jokes too.
Sox had to make a claim-if for no other reason than to block Cleveland from getting him.
